Jones inks commitment to Shendandoah
Shawn Jones didn’t always plan to play football in college. He never played a down during middle school.
But as Jones transitioned to high school, former Bluestone High School coaches Waverly Jackson and Jesse Chropka convinced him to work out with the Barons over the summer.
“Doing summer workouts, I fell in love with the game,” Jones said.
Now a senior member of the Class of 2019 at Bluestone, Jones on Wednesday committed to play college football at Shenandoah University. An offensive and defensive lineman, he said the plan is to focus on offense in college.
A native of South Hill who played pee-wee football with the Yellow Jackets organization, Jones moved to Chase City during his sixth-grade year but didn’t join the school football team until ninth grade, when he played JV.
His favorite football memory came the following season when, as a sophomore member of the varsity Bluestone squad, he helped the Barons qualify for the playoffs for the first time in school history.
He said he’s learned a lot from the game.
“It taught me leadership and that everybody doesn’t have to be blood-related to be a family,” Jones said. “It’s taken me places, camps and colleges and stuff like that.”
He said Shenandoah University offers the same type of family environment to which he became accustomed at Bluestone.
“I like the family environment at Shenandoah,” he said. “It’s very welcoming. I felt at home.”
Bluestone Head Coach Harry John only coached Jones one season but was impressed from Day One.
“Shawn is a great young man who has been training for this opportunity since the very first day I met him,” John said. “I am happy he has found a new home at Shenandoah University, and I wish Shawn all the success he deserves in the future.”
After signing his letter-of-intent, Jones expressed gratitude to his mother, family, and all the coaches who helped him along the way.
