Bluestone students get taste of reality
Bluestone High School partnered with community organizations and volunteers to host a Reality Store for economics and personal finance students on Tuesday, where students got a taste of the realities of being an adult and money management with the goal being to learn the importance of budgeting for housing, insurance, child care, food, etc.
The students were given a job, income, and family situation and tasked with visiting a number of stations around the gym representing different areas of adult life, such as Medical and Dental, Personal Care and Clothing, Grocery, Housing, Communications, Credit Card, Entertainment, Supplemental Income, etc. The students had checking and savings account ledgers to record their monthly revenues and expenses and organize their budgets.
The stations were manned by Mecklenburg County Cooperative Extension agents, who helped organize the Reality Store, along with volunteers from the community and Mecklenburg County Public Schools staff.
